Hard work pays off. No doubt about that. One day last week the B team coaches could be overheard telling their kids at practice, get through this week, and the rest will appear easy. None of them quit. It could be the taste of that Turf Bowl Trophy still fresh in their mouths from last season, or it could be fear, but one thing is for sure, they worked hard, and today, it showed.
These kids have not been in a game since they walked off the turf at Marshall last year with the trophy in their hands after a very hard fought win over rival DC. There was a little rust noticeable at the start of the game, then the speed came out to play.
The offense scored on the third play of the game on a 27 yard touchdown pass from Gavin Lochow to Amari Felder. The offense then stumbled a bit with a fumble, followed by a defensive stop then it took them a whole two plays to score again. This time it was a 19 yard touchdown run by Tez Tubbs. Two plays later, in the endzone again. Five plays later, in the endzone again. Seven players later…I think you are getting the picture.
Meanwhile, the defense was lowering the boom from all angles. Whether it was Tubbs smothering anything headed out to his corner of the field, or Devin Pitts stuffing runs on his area of the gridiron. Wherever the Bulldogs of Lawrence County ran, there was a white jersey with a white hat on to make the tackle.
Their conditioning paid off, and it showed as the game progressed they seemed to get stronger, and faster, and at the end of the day, headed back to Huntington with a 36 to 0 victory.
The offense was led by quarterback Lochow and a plethora of dynamite running backs/wide receivers. In all six kids touched the ball, and five of them found their way into the endzone, whether it be for a touchdown or two point conversion. The only one who didn’t, Lochow, threw for two touchdowns.
